Makeup artist James Molloy knows a thing or two about combining timeless red carpet beauty with a fresh, modern edge. He’s trusted by classic beauties like Emma Watson, Addison Rae and Jourdan Dunn, has created runway looks for Stella McCartney and Moschino and had his work featured in VOGUE and Harper’s Bazaar. Years spent living in Japan (he has since relocated to the UK) enhanced his love of exquisite textures and incredible, shape-shifting colour.
Oh yes: and he LOVES eyeshadow. “When I started out as a makeup artist, it’s the first product I picked up,” he says. Which is why, when we wanted to create three all-time-great, every-day-essential, no-shade-left-behind eyeshadow quartets, we knew James was the person for the job.
The result: the James Molloy Deluxe Eyeshadow Quads. Three palettes with deluxe, creamy Italian-made textures and the perfect, flattering, suits-everyone shades that celebrate the miracle skin-enhancing effects of three precious metals: Gold, Rose Gold and Silver.
The mix of velvety mattes, buttery shimmer finishes and concentrated pigments were created using a new talc-free, long-wear technology for silky, blendable, pure colour payoff curated to flatter all skin tones. Each palette contains two velvet mattes (the ‘backbone’ of each palette, for washing over lids) plus a metallic frost shade (a deeper metallic for warmth and depth) and a high shimmer shade (to highlight).
“I painstakingly went through so many different swatches and references and old eyeshadows from my kit that I’ve loved over the years, and the thing I really had at the forefront of my mind was, ‘are they universally flattering? Can anyone wear these?’ And ultimately that’s what decided whether something made the palette or not.“
It was also important to James to have a mixture of two subtle matte shades and two more gleaming metallics in each palette. “In my career I’ve had phases where I’ve been obsessed with everything from super-brights to metallics to neutrals, but as I become more ‘seasoned’ in my career, I’m more and more drawn to the timeless classics - so long as there’s a modern texture. That’s what I’ve created with these palettes: something that’s easy and wearable, where all shades go together, but there’s a luxe creaminess to the textures that keep everything looking really fresh and current.” (The mattes, says James, “feel like velvet,” while the metallic shades “feel like satin.”)
“There’s nothing too bright or too bold in any of these shades. I really think they’re about as universally flattering as you can get in a palette!“
