It’s one thing to be a world-renowned dermatologist who’s passionate about healthy skin. But it’s quite another to be a world-renowned dermatologist who’s also passionate about products, skincare and the joy of combining performance ingredients with gorgeous textures and scents.
That’s where Dr Andrew Markey comes in. A Consultant Dermatologist and Dermatological and Laser Surgeon, his London clinic has a steady stream of A-listers through its doors (he’s not naming names but he did reveal that clients were offering to send their private jets for him when lockdown prevented them from travelling - he politely declined).
Having worked and studied in the US at the start of his career, he returned to the UK and became one of the pioneers of the new world of lasers and injectables - and remains one of the most sought-after derms on both sides of the Atlantic.
But one thing Dr Markey also loves is what he calls “a good face cream.” He combines his surgical expertise with a life-long fascination with cosmetic science - and how skincare and makeup products are formulated. That’s what brings him to BEAUTY PIE. “I firmly believe that the key to healthy skin is in products people actually enjoy using,” he says. “It’s the combination of clinically-proven ingredients with the ‘secret sauce’ of texture, scent and experience.”
“I often head to cosmetics rather than prescription creams - because they are generally so much nicer to use.“
For that reason, says Dr Markey, when recommending products to patients, “I often head to cosmetics rather than prescription creams - because they are generally so much nicer to use.” But of course, the products he recommends have to make the grade medically, too. Dr Markey looks for what he calls his ‘Master Molecules’ which are Vitamin A (also known as Retinol or Retinoids), Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) and Vitamin C.
One thing he’s keen to point out is that while the beauty world has become fixated on specific active ingredients, as a dermatologist he believes that it’s not just about the percentages of active ingredients you use, but how well-balanced those actives are within each product. “There’s a trend at the moment to be too aggressive with active ingredients,” he says. “But overdoing the actives can lead to what I call ‘inflammaging’; skin irritation that can lead skin to show premature signs of ageing.” Instead, he says, you can get very good results “by being moderate with the amount of Master Molecules you use and balancing them with calming, soothing agents in a beautiful formulation.”
“I’m very excited to be sharing my passion for education in healthy skin habits with the BEAUTY PIE team.“
At BEAUTY PIE, Dr Markey has already selected some key products that tick his boxes of proven results combined with winning formulations - see below for his latest edit. “I’m very excited to be sharing my passion for education in healthy skin habits with the BEAUTY PIE team,” he says. “Using a mixture of dermatological know-how, skin science and a sprinkling of fun, I hope to help all on their journey towards healthy skin goals.”
Perfectly balanced to both revive and replenish, this ultra-gentle encapsulated Retinol serum is infused with Lactic and Hyaluronic Acids, and a concentrated, barrier-repairing Ceramide blend to help protect, brighten, hydrate, smooth fine lines and soothe your skin.
“What I like about BEAUTY PIE’s Super Retinol range is that the formulations are gentle, and the Retinol is encapsulated and in a more stable form than most of the ones I see. Too many people suffer irritation and inflammation from using aggressive actives on their skin. The Super Retinol range allows you to start gently and build up.” - Dr Andrew Markey
This is what you need if your eyes look tired. Swiss-formulated, with line-smoothing slow-release Retinol microcapsules, moisture-magnetising Hyaluronic Acid to plump and soften, anti-ageing Allosteris to slowly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, and Bioflavonoids to brighten. It’s like a jolt of youth in a bottle.
“A good Retinol eye cream must be sufficiently light for the very thin skin around the eyes. This formulation is very delicate, combining Retinol with great moisturisers. It’s not occlusive, heavy or clogging. It’s also really great to have a gentler eye cream when perhaps you’re graduating to a Retinol face cream that is more powerful.” - Dr Andrew Markey
Formulated in Switzerland with the most effective, targeted and encapsulated Retinol, biotech Pseudo-Collagen and Shea Butter, this hard-working hand cream helps brighten sun-spots, re-elasticise skin and deeply moisturise. (There’s a reason it gets a lot of ‘LOVE’ ratings and reviews.)
“Retinol is fantastic for treating uneven skin texture on the back of the hands and helping with pigmentation irregularities. It can also help when hands are particularly dry - it contains very good moisturising ‘magnet’ ingredients. I recommend using it at night, and following up with SPF on the hands in the day.” - Dr Andrew Markey
This superstar Swiss overnight formula has everything anti-ageing in it – Encapsulated Retinol (resurfacing), Ficucell Vita (antioxidant), Shea Butter (nourishing), Vitamins E and C (elasticity+) and Ferulic and Hyaluronic Acids (plumping and hydrating). It’s super-smoothing, fine-line and wrinkle tackling, brightening, and we think possibly the best Retinol night moisturiser ever.
“Dermatologists like to encourage you to use Retinol at night. This moisturiser with its encapsulated form of Retinol and effective delivery system is a very good way to start.” - Dr Andrew Markey
A superactive new hybrid Retinol booster serum, with 3% Encapsulated Retinol Complex, 1% Pinaretinol and low-level Lactic Acid to gently resurface the outer layer of the skin. For low-irritation, it contains bioavailable Vitamin A delivery and a double dose of resurfacing and collagen boosting. Plus, it has hydrating FicuCell Vita, a concentrated Ceramide blend, Hyaluronic Acid, and a soothing Soja Seed complex. We recommend graduating to this treatment only after your skin has had some experience with Retinol.
“Apply this nice and gently after cleansing. I would use a couple of pumps, not every night in the first week - maybe two or three times. And do make sure that whenever you’re using a retinol - and in fact anyway - avoid direct sunlight on the skin, wear a hat and use broad spectrum SPF during the day. “ - Dr Andrew Markey
A state-of-the-art, must-have 2-in-1 SPF 50 sunscreen-plus-primer. A featherlight SPF 50, with light-absorbing DNA SHIELD + Chromophores to help fight inflammation and sun damage, Vitis Vita Grape Extract for skin detoxification and rehydration, plus VitaFreeze active Tomato Stem Cell Extract - a natural blend of Peptides and Sugar Molecules that reduce the level of stress-induced reactive oxygen species. It’s amazing.
“Whenever people ask me when they should use SPF, I always say: just don’t even ask the question. Don’t check the weather forecast. Don’t think about what you’ll be doing that day. Just put sunscreen on every day, without thinking - just like you brush your teeth. And it’s a lot easier to do when you find a sunscreen you are happy with.” - Dr Andrew Markey
These super-targeted ‘one-shot’ capsules hold high doses of stable actives, so you can ‘up the skincare ante’ as-and-when-needed, with a simple twist, squeeze and tap. With a double dose of pure Vitamin C, the capsules are boosted with Vitamin E acetate for moisture and antioxidation. They also help to firm, smooth and brighten, minimise the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and help even out skin tone.
“Vitamin C is one of what I call my ‘Master Molecules’ - because it can make such a difference to the health of the skin. It is an antioxidant. It can stop inflammaging caused by UV light and environmental pollutants. It stimulates new collagen and helps protect skin from developing pigmentation. It can also improve the brightness of the complexion and evenness of skin tone. I really recommend that everyone ensures there is Vitamin C in a stable form somewhere in their skincare regime.” - Dr Andrew Markey
