Most skincare and cosmetic packaging are on a 4-6 month lead time. And if you're colour matching something (like we did with the lining of the cap of our Superdose Vitamin C Oxygen Boosting Moisturizer, for instance) it can take a few back and forths before you get what you've asked for! Or even what you thought you asked for – for example, your chosen colour on recycled plastic can differ when shown on paper. Or when you want to match other parts of the same range on different substrate materials, or secure the correct END colour if you're mixing in Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) materials (which we always try to do, but they can add a slightly greyish tinge to the substrate which may then require tweaks).
So once we've picked our packaging, we have to ensure the viscosity of the product suits not only the shape, the pump, the orifice and the material, it also needs to pass the evacuation test BEFORE we place the order. After that, there is a 4-6 month wait for the first production – longer if it travels across water. It's why we're currently working on launches 1-2 years ahead, and why getting new ideas or requests isn't as easy as it might look. But then, nothing GREAT is ever easy, right?
With an estimated 12% rise in lip colour cosmetic sales, making the category worth £306 million a year in the UK and set to hit $8.6 billion in the US by 2019 (while other sectors of retail – like apparel and fast fashion - plummet) we at BEAUTY PIE are betting on a trend we’ve dubbed ‘lipstick relief’.
