We all know the skin-glowing, confidence-boosting joy of a good self tan. But here’s the thing: there are good ways to apply it (long, bronzed limbs, naturally sun-kissed features)… and there are bad ones (mad streaks, muddy ankles). But it doesn’t have to be a source of stress - here’s how to bronze-up brilliantly...
Like everything in life, thinking ahead always pays off. Showering right before tanning affects the finished result, which tends to come out less even and less intense compared to tan applied to bone-dry, non-showered skin. So hit the shower the night before. While you’re in there, a little body brushing will help buff away any rough patches.
And in the ones you don’t (anywhere you’re super-dry, or maybe have an eczema flare-up, for example) or other areas where you want to prevent the tan grabbing, such as your nails or blonde eyebrows (which could turn orange), use a light coating of body lotion before tanning to act as a barrier.

When it comes to at-home tanning products, the pros love self-tanning mousses because they’re so easy to use: they glide easily and dry quickly. You have to work relatively fast - so now’s the moment for laser-focus (and no distractions!). Don’t be afraid to dispense four or five pumps onto your tanning mitt at a time; this will allow you more ‘liquid time’ to spread the product around the skin.

Then, in large circular motions, go over the same area to blend and cover any missed areas.
You don’t have to worry about how to self tan your back - and you don’t have to be a contortionist, either. Pump a further three squirts of tanning mousse onto your mitt, turning it around so the pad is on the back of your hand. Wave the mitt up and down one side of your back, then turn it back on your hand and blend into your sides and up over your shoulder. Repeat the process on the other side of your back with the other arm, standing in front of a mirror so you can check you’ve covered all areas.
