We all know the skin-glowing, confidence-boosting joy of a good self tan. But here’s the thing: there are good ways to apply it (long, bronzed limbs, naturally sun-kissed features)… and there are bad ones (mad streaks, muddy ankles). But it doesn’t have to be a source of stress - here’s how to bronze-up brilliantly...
Like everything in life, thinking ahead always pays off. Showering right before tanning affects the finished result, which tends to come out less even and less intense compared to tan applied to bone-dry, non-showered skin. So hit the shower the night before. While you’re in there, a little body brushing will help buff away any rough patches.
And in the ones you don’t (anywhere you’re super-dry, or maybe have an eczema flare-up, for example) or other areas where you want to prevent the tan grabbing, such as your nails or blonde eyebrows (which could turn orange), use a light coating of body lotion before tanning to act as a barrier.
Our Superdose™ Vitamin C Bio-Vitamin Brightening Body Lotion is the perfect pre-tan partner: it's a high-tech, radiance-boosting, moisturizing body lotion, loaded with Tranexamic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid, firming Brown Algae and stable Vitamin C, which as well as brightening and rejuvenating will provide the perfect barrier to the bits where you don’t want the tan to ‘take’ too much.
When it comes to at-home tanning products, the pros love self-tanning mousses because they’re so easy to use: they glide easily and dry quickly. You have to work relatively fast - so now’s the moment for laser-focus (and no distractions!). Don’t be afraid to dispense four or five pumps onto your tanning mitt at a time; this will allow you more ‘liquid time’ to spread the product around the skin.
Our Awesome Bronze™ No-Streak Self Tanning Mousse comes in two shades - Golden Bronze Light and Golden Bronze Deep - and contains Hyaluronic Acid for healthy-looking, supple skin. Start at the top of the body, arms first. Then blend into the chest, and down to your torso and legs. Use the left-over tan on the mitt to do feet and hands. Use long, sweeping, mindful motions to work the mousse in. Go with up-and-down strokes first to disperse product over the area (like a leg or your torso). Then, in large circular motions, go over the same area to blend and cover any missed areas.
You don’t have to worry about how to self tan your back - and you don’t have to be a contortionist, either. Pump a further three squirts of tanning mousse onto your mitt, turning it around so the pad is on the back of your hand. Wave the mitt up and down one side of your back, then turn it back on your hand and blend into your sides and up over your shoulder. Repeat the process on the other side of your back with the other arm, standing in front of a mirror so you can check you’ve covered all areas.
Don’t apply any more body products today, but tomorrow you can start adding an extra gleam to your newly-bronzed skin. Go for our Awesome Bronze™ Luxe Shimmer Oil Body Balm - our gorgeous limited edition summer body butter, infused with skin-softening Coconut Oil, Coconut Milk, Shea Butter, Meadowfoam Oil and Glycerin, and fragranced with summer-in-a-jar scents of Tiare Flower Extract and Vanilla.
BEAUTY PIE Awesome Bronze™ Self-Tanning Mousse works with all skin tones. On darker skin tones, applying a tanning mousse all over will give instant contour, tone, and beautiful depth. It’s also the ideal way to even out any pigmentation.
“A large makeup brush is fab for achieving a flawless finish on the hands, feet and face,” says uber tanning expert Michaella Bolder.
“After applying, swish a brush in a brisk circular motion along arms, down legs and over shoulders, neck and chest.”
