Maybe it’s stress relief. Maybe all the incessant daily multi-tasking has had us all grasping for multi-layered skincare solutions too. Maybe – just maybe – we just LOVE a good face mask (or three).
Whatever your reason, our enthusiasm for DIY beauty treatments has reached heady new heights in recent months, with searches for the best skincare treatments and the best face masks (no, not those ones) up month on month.
But how do we get the BEST results from our go-to skin treatments and face mask combos? Multi-masking, of course. The truth is, most of us have a variety of different skin issues - many of which can’t always be answered with just one product. Which is where skincare layering comes in. We asked Marcia Kilgore (Pie Founder, beauty guru and expert skincare experimentalist) for her tailormade, expert guide to layering – and multi-masking– like a pro’.
Use once or twice a week
Deep cleanse and apply your favourite serum or SuperDrops.
Smooth on whichever face mask best suits your skin type.
When skin feels congested, clogged, oily, blocked and full of blackheads, Marcia recommends:
STEP 1: CLEANSE “Use a milky, creamy, or balmy cleanser – I like Japanfusion Pure Transforming Cleanser for hard-to-move blackheads and clogs. While balms may feel greasy, they will soften the hardened oil and keratinized plugs that are filling your pores from your sebaceous follicles. Massage your face for 3-4 minutes in circular motions with your fingertips. Use a double-sided cleansing cloth or a konjac sponge to remove it.
STEP 2: EXFOLIATE Use an exfoliator to remove dead, keratinized and potentially clogging cells from the surface of your skin. For oily or heavily congested skin, choose the legendary Fruitizyme Five Minute Facial. Use a hazelnut sized amount, scrub in circles, gently and with lightness, then leave on for 5 minutes for a solid, skin clearing surface peel.
STEP 3 - TREATMENT: If your skin is oily/clogged, ADD a thin layer of Super Pore Detox Purifying Black Clay Mask across oilier areas, leave on for 3 minutes (if you’re sensitive), 5-10 (if you’re not), then rinse well, then finish with serum and/or moisturizer.“
When skin feels dry, dull, lacklustre or like it’s dragging its feet, Marcia recommends:
STEP 1: “Fruit Acids not only exfoliate, they stimulate, and they hydrate. After cleansing thoroughly (with a dry-skin suitable cleanser), soak a cotton pad with Dr Glycolic Glow Toner and rub it - using a bit of pressure- all over your face, behind your ears, over your neck and chest, and then flip and repeat. This will get rid of any dead cells on your skin’s surface so everything else you layer on is optimized.
STEP 2 – TREATMENT– Refuel your face with Oxygen Instant Facial Refuelling Mask. Slather a thick layer over your face and neck, avoiding your eyes, and let it sink in, and re-oxygenate your face (5-7 minutes, max).
STEP 3: Next, apply a generous amount of the yuzu-ceramide intensive Japanfusion BioCeramide Deep Moisture Mask. Either target specific areas and remove any excess after 10 minutes, or apply allover, massaging it in
Whether they’re hormonal breakouts, comedones, whiteheads, stress-related spots, papules, pustules or you suffer from cystic acne, when skin is breaking out all over the place, Marcia recommends:
STEP 1: CLEANSE Super Healthy Skin Deep Purifying Clay Cleanser – while too strong to use everyday, it really is like a mini facial in a tube. Massage a thin layer on any and everywhere you’re battling breakouts and acne. After 5 minutes, use a double-sided cleansing cloth or a konjac sponge to remove it.
STEP 2: Take a dropperful of Plantastic Micropeeling Super Drops (or two, if you have a larger surface to treat) and apply to any affected area. They’re formulated with exfoliating salicylic acid, mango fruit acid smoothers, Vitabright extract for refining pores and reducing the appearance of pigmentation and a purifying antimicrobial biosurfactant, and are excellent for battling breakouts.
STEP 3 – TREATMENT: For oily or heavily congested skin, start with the Fruitizyme Five Minute Facial (as before) targeting areas of concern. Next, neutralize the anaerobic bacteria that’s causing inflammation (and the acne), and deploy the miraculous Oxygen Instant Facial Refuelling Mask in a thick layer, all over any affected area- and if you have cling-film in the house, apply it in strips on top for best oxygen penetration (but do make sure you can breath, please!). You may feel quite a lot of tingling as it sinks in, but that just means it’s working. After 10 minutes, remove or rub in any excess, and moisturize (if you feel the need). You should see a huge improvement in 12-24 hours!”
