Eye makeup in need of a shake-up? International makeup artist James Molloy has poured his years of glossy fashion and beauty work, his knowledge of easy red carpet glamour and his love of beautifully luxe eyeshadows into three standout eye quads, the James Molloy Deluxe Eyeshadow Quads.
Here, he reveals how to create three fresh, quick and easy looks that will give you that all-important touch of polish in a matter of minutes.
Featuring: Soft Brown velvet matte, Chocolate Brown velvet matte, Rich Brown metallic frost and Sunset Gold high shimmer.
“It’s like makeup ‘shorthand’ - it looks like you’ve spent ages doing your makeup when it was just a quick wash of gorgeous browns and golds“
- James Molloy
First, apply Flawless Eyeshadow primer across the lids to ensure a smoother, even grippier surface.
Choose one of the two velvet matte shades and use a soft brush (like the Pro Perfect Eyeshadow Base Brush) to wash the color across the eyelids and into the sockets. (The darker shade gives more of a classic smoky eye; the lighter one a more daytime look).
Next, using a softer brush like the Eyeshadow Blending Brush, add the darker of the two metallics (the Rich Brown Metallic Frost) and wash it across the lid, staying closer to the lash line. (This shade has the most amazing sheen to it - if you were pushed for time, I’d say you could use this one on its own as a fabulous, frosted smoky eye).
Finally, take the high-shimmer shade (Sunset Gold) and ‘spot light’ it into the corners of the eye.
Deep coffee brown mascara
lovely nude skin - just a sheer tinted moisturizer to keep skin nice and dewy.
“For evening, you could also use the pale gold shade as a highlighter, under the brow bones, a little on the cheekbones,” says James. “Take a super-soft brush and just give a gentle, diffused highlight - and be playful with lips. A hot orange like XXX could be really gorgeous, or something with a little bronze in it - try XXX."
Featuring: Soft Brown velvet matte, Deep Brown velvet matte, Rich Burgundy metallic frost and Champagne high shimmer.
“For that absolutely classic, gorgeous, flattering eye. Really romantic, but shot through with a touch of rose to keep things really modern“
- James Molloy
Prep the eye area with Flawless Eyeshadow Primer. Then, use the Pro Perfect Eyeshadow Base brush to wash the Soft Brown velvet matte shade (the lighter of the two matte finishes) over the eyelid and into the eye crease. This is your ‘canvas.’
Next, create a sculpted socket line using the Deep Brown velvet matte, to add depth and definition to the eyes. Use the Pro Contour Eyeshadow Brush to do this as it is made to sculpt and define.
In the outer corner of the eye, add just a touch of the deeper metallic shade, blending inwards across the lid to create a soft little outer flick.
Then, using the Rich Burgundy metallic frost shade, use an eye-defining brush like Shape & Smudge Eyeshadow Brush to create a gently ‘smoked’ effect all the way along the upper and lower lash line, softly framing the eyes. Add a black mascara like Über Volume™ Boost Velvet Formula Mascara in Super Black and you’re good to go.

Featuring: Soft Brown velvet matte, Charcoal Brown velvet matte, Cool Brown metallic frost, Icy Silver high shimmer.
“Much softer than traditional smoky eye palettes, and a little bit Parisienne“
- James Molloy
Prep the eye area with Flawless Eyeshadow Primer. Then, use the Pro Perfect Eyeshadow Base brush to wash the Soft Brown velvet matte shade (the deeper of the two matte finishes) over the eyelid and into the eye crease to create the foundation of a warm, smoky eye.
Next, create a sculpted socket line using the Charcoal Brown velvet matte, to create depth and a touch of ‘smoulder’. Use the Pro Contour Eyeshadow Brush to do this as it is made to sculpt and define.
Sweep the Cool Brown metallic frost under the lower lash line, using the Pro Contour Eyeshadow brush to create a lovely, soft line.
Finally, highlight in the corner of the eye (you might want to dab this in with your ring finger) with the Icy Silver high shimmer shade. Finish with multiple coasts of Über Volume™ black mascara for a defined, dramatic look.
“A mistake I often see people making is loading their brush up with too much eyeshadow and then brushing it very lightly across the eyes. What I prefer to do is press the shadow in, taking a bit more time to slowly blend it. I find doing this that the eyeshadow really melts into skin much better, but also adheres better so you get more staying power.“
