They’re microscopic, needle-like structures naturally found in certain freshwater and marine sponges. They form part of the sponge’s structural framework and are typically composed primarily of silica.
In skincare, these structures can be carefully purified and refined into extremely fine particles. Marine micro-sponge spicules are particularly interesting, combining naturally derived materials with a remarkably precise microscopic structure.
And unlike an exfoliating particle designed simply to polish the skin’s surface, spicules have a much cleverer role to play.

Your skin’s outermost layer - the stratum corneum - is an exceptionally effective barrier. Which is exactly what you want it to be. But it also presents skincare formulators with an interesting challenge: how can a formula help its ingredients interact with the skin as effectively as possible?

We’ve already seen increasingly sophisticated approaches including encapsulation, liposomes and micro-needling-inspired technology.
