My ability to be the Queen Of Chilled under the rather strenuous pressure of being the conductor of a fast-moving design machine.
The people. The people are everything.
Turkish Coffee Eyeliner. I have about four on the go at all times and couldn’t live without it.
My mission every day is to crank world-class content out of our creative studio before our deadlines hit. And because we are populating not only social media feeds, but emails and product pages, pack shots, and packaging templates, plus videos, swatches, gifs, web interfaces, and a/b test designs, delivering this requires a triple-virgo-esque level of organization of ‘the talent’, a fair bit of ongoing relationship-building, diplomacy (everybody thinks their project is urgent), some cajoling, and I’d estimate at least two-and-a-half miracles each week.
We’re a tight team. It’s me, our Head of Creative, In-House Still Life Photographer, Graphic Designers - one for web, one for packaging - and any freelancers we need to pick up the overflow. Briefs are constantly being piled onto my desk, and I love being challenged by whatever we’re working on next. There’s the nonstop influx of ‘business as usual’. This month, we had three days to design a pop-up shop for a too-good-to-pass-up last-minute opportunity with British Vogue. Last month we were knee deep in video. Next? Translating the first ever BEAUTY PIE ad campaign onto our website- and fasten your seatbelts, because it’s going to be brilliant.
Because we’re delivering luxury beauty for lab-direct prices, we operate on a tight budget, so I’ve always got my eyes peeled for photogenic people (who knew one of our accounting interns would turn into a supermodel behind the lens?) that we can shoot products/colours/swatches/makeup looks on. If you’re reading this, and know somebody who fits the bill and WILL WORK FOR BODY CREAM, please email me.
What happened when The Beauty Dept. caught up with BEAUTY PIE’s CREATIVE ADVISOR-AT-LARGE, Marcia Kilgore. She's given facials to everybody from Uma to Madonna to Oprah, created a day spa boom - with Bliss - in the United States, built Soap & Glory from a brainwave (before selling it to Boots), and created the footwear brand for superwomen - FitFlop. Here, she tells us how she came up with her latest brainwave, BEAUTY PIE.
